IAbout the Service

Chat your book (the "Service") is a literary reading platform. It provides access to public domain literature with AI-powered features including margin chats, character analysis, annotations, and alternative-plot exploration. The Service is available on the web at chatyourbook.com and as mobile apps for iOS and Android. The Service is operated from the United Kingdom (referred to in these Terms as "we", "us", and "our").

IIAccepting these Terms

By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service. On mobile, these Terms sit alongside (and don't replace) the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions or the Google Play Terms of Service.

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. The Service is written for secondary-school students and older readers. If the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing to terms like these on your own, you'll need a parent or guardian's permission.

IIIAccounts

You'll need an account to use most features. You're responsible for keeping your sign-in details safe and for what happens under your account. Please give us accurate information when you sign up. You can delete your account at any time from the in-app settings, and we'll remove your data within 30 days (see our Privacy Policy for details).

IVSubscriptions and billing

We offer a Free plan and paid plans (Reader and Scholar). How you're billed depends on where you subscribed.

Web purchases

Subscriptions bought on chatyourbook.com are billed by Paddle, our Merchant of Record. By subscribing, you also agree to Paddle's terms of service.

Mobile in-app purchases

Subscriptions bought through the iOS or Android app are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). Billing, payment, and refunds for in-app purchases are handled entirely by Apple or Google, under their own terms. You can manage and cancel your subscription from your device's subscription settings.

Auto-renewal

Monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Lifetime purchases are a one-time payment for permanent access and don't auto-renew.

VRefunds

Refund routes depend on where you bought the subscription:

• Web (Paddle): monthly and yearly subscriptions can be refunded within 14 days. Lifetime purchases can be refunded within 30 days. Email support@chatyourbook.com.
• iOS App Store: refunds are handled by Apple. Use Apple's "Report a Problem" page or your purchase history in Settings.
• Google Play: refunds are handled by Google. Use Google Play's refund process, or email support@chatyourbook.com for help.

VIA note on AI

AI is what makes margin notes, summaries, and alternative plots possible, but it isn't infallible. A few things worth knowing:

• AI output can contain mistakes, misreadings, or invented details.
• AI responses aren't a substitute for scholarship. Treat them as a study companion, not a citation.
• The original text is always the source of truth.
• We moderate AI interactions to prevent harmful content, but no system is perfect.
• Your annotations and margin notes are yours. AI-generated responses are provided for personal use within the Service.

VIIThe texts and our work

The literary texts in the Service are works in the public domain in the United States and most other jurisdictions. You're free to read, quote, and share them. Everything else, our enrichments (summaries, entity data, suggested questions), AI-generated content, design, cover artwork, and code, is proprietary to the Service and licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use.

VIIIAcceptable use

To keep the Service good for everyone, please don't:

• Use the Service for anything unlawful.
• Try to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the AI models or proprietary technology.
• Use automated tools to scrape or bulk-download content from the Service.
• Share your account credentials with anyone else.
• Try to circumvent usage limits or access controls.
• Use the AI features to generate harmful, abusive, or illegal content.

IXLimits of our liability

The Service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages that may arise from your use of the Service. Our total aggregate liability is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before any claim.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for fraud, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or anything else that the law doesn't allow us to exclude.

XDisputes and applicable law

United Kingdom and European Union

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. EU consumers may also use the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.

United States

For US users, disputes will be resolved through binding arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that qualifying claims may be brought in small claims court. You agree to waive any right to a jury trial or to participate in a class action.

Australia and New Zealand

Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law or the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act. Where those laws apply, our liability is limited to re-supplying the Service or refunding the amount paid for it.

XIApple and Google additional terms

If you use the Service through the iOS or Android app:

• These Terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google.
• Apple and Google have no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
• If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple or Google for a refund of the purchase price (if any). Beyond that, neither has any further warranty obligation.
• Apple and Google are not responsible for handling claims relating to the app.
• Apple and Google are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them.

XIIChanges to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If a change is material, we'll let you know by email or through the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the new Terms.
